VR Kinect: Video

This project was done for my dissertation. This was to see if VR could be made more immersive without being expensive, this connects the Oculus rift and Xbox 360 kinect to see if it can do motion tracking. It works when the user is facing the camera, but no so much when turned away. The game that was made for this was a game where cannons would move around the map and fire cannon balls at you. You can use your body to move out of the way, or you can block the cannon balls with your arms or legs.

Abstract:

Virtual reality is becoming more widely spread allowing users to be able to immerse themselves within a virtual world that will allow them work around their own room space and this in turn allows them to be able to move around the virtual world. One of the problems is interacting with the virtual world is that we currently have controllers, but to make it more impulsive for the users it would be much better for the users to be able to use their own body. Currently there are developments into motion capture virtual reality, but the prices are too expensive for the avenge person. Can we make it cheaper buy using an Xbox 360 Kinect and use the motion capture on that to attach it to a virtual reality headset? The Kinect allows users to play games using their body on the television so it should be able to work if we use in virtual reality as well.

Virtual reality is becoming more widely available, allowing users to be able to immerse themselves within a virtual world. This will allow the use in a domestic setting, within their own home space. In turn, this will allow the user to move around the virtual world.

One of the problems of interacting within the virtual world is that we are constrained by the use of controllers. To make it more inclusive for the users, it would be more interactive for the users to be able to use their own body.

Currently there are developments into motion capture virtual reality using depth cameras and body suits to capture movement. However, the prices are too expensive for the average person. In this dissertation, I investigate whether the cost could be reduced by using an Xbox 360 Kinect motion capture and attach this to a virtual reality headset? The Kinect allows users to play games, using their body on the television, so this could be integrated within virtual reality to make the users experience more immersive.
